To come up with a cool, innovative present for my mom each year is not an easy task for me. I mean, there is her birthday in February, Christmas in December and Mother’s Day in May… plus any old day, I-was-thinking-of-you present, but those are easy because they don’t require planning for a specific day. I tend to think when you’re in your 60’s, you’ve already lived up quite a lot, and you become more picky and restrained to certain activities.
So my quest was to give her this year an experience that would top all the previous years. But what could that be within the city limits of Barranquilla?
By chance, I was invited by a friend to sing karaoke on a Thursday night at a bowling alley called The Fun Zone. “That’s odd,” I thought as I was there, “a bowling alley for kids, with adult activities and beverages at night?” Just out of curiosity, I went to see what it was all about.
Since we got there early enough to take advantage of the Ladies Drink Free offer, I was able to witness the transition between a bowling alley to cool comfy and relax disco-bar space. At the bowling alley, I realized that bowling isn’t just a kids activity, nor was the place. In fact, it was an all family and friends kind of place. It had a lot of favorable elements to make it work. The Fun Zone offered bowling and restaurant for the family, video games for the kids, billiards and a full bar service for adults, and this night Karaoke and free drinks for the women!
Enough said, my research had ended right there and then. I talked to my friends, and we got our mom’s together for a day of packed fun activities: Bowling, drinks, and dinner at the Fun Zone it was!
The day came, and I went to “supervise” that the plan would be a success… and it was! They played, laughed, danced and ate a well-deserved delicious dinner. And yes, they still talk about it to this day.
